What Constitutes a Marriage According To The Scriptures?

Go to Marriage, Divorce And remarriage Teaching Audio

The devils of Hell have convinced preachers across this country that one thing constitutes a marriage and that is the coming together sexually.

The proof text for this heresy I Corinthians 6:16 “What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.” If you only had this one verse it would be interpreted that way. By interpreting the scripture this way there is no sin in shacking up, seeing they have come together and are married.

Anybody who can think for themselves know this is not so. In comparing scripture with scripture a person can find the truth. First look at John 4, Jesus meets a woman at the well. In verse 4 - And he must needs go through Samaria. Verse 5 - Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Verse 6 - Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. Verse 7 – There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. Verse 8 - (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) Verse 9 - Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. Verse 10 - Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him,and he would have given thee living water. Verse 11 - The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? Verse 12 - Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? Verse 13 - Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: Verse 14 - But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. Verse 15 - The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw. Verse 16 - Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. Verse 17 - The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: Verse 18 - For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly. He states she hast had five husbands, preachers today would say she still has five, and the one she now has is not her husband.

If you are foolish enough to believe they were living together without coming together sexually then you don’t know human nature or you are just trying to prove your stupid doctrine.

Lot came together with his daughters, Genesis 19:30-33 “And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for hefeared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters. And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth: Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.” But they were never called his wives.

In I Corinthians there is a man coming together with his Father’s wife, I Corinthians 5:1-5 “It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife. And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you. For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed, In the
name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.” They are never called husband and wife.

Tamar is never called Judah’s wife even though they came together sexually. Gen. 38:11 Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father's house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.12 And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah's wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.13 And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.
14 And she put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.16 And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?17 And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?18 And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.19 And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.20 And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand: but he found her not.21 Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.22 And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.23 And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.24 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more. By comparing the above scriptures it is plain that it takes more than a sexual act to constitute a marriage.

Ronnie Simpson said what constitutes a marriage is leaving, cleaving and coming together. I know a couple who have shacked up for fifteen years. They have left, cleaved and came together, have two children but are not married. So another heresy bites the dust.

According to the scriptures it takes three things to constitute a Marriage. They are: 1. consent or covenant between two parties, 2. A public confession or statement either written or oral 3. The coming together in a sexual act. In order to show this I will use the following chart:

The Marriage                       Covenant                  Public Confession                    Coming together
                                          (Malachi 2:14)
1. Adam and Eve                 Genesis 2:23              Genesis 2:23, 3:20                  Genesis 2:24
2. Ruth and Boaz                 Ruth 3:9-13, 4:9-11    Ruth 4:9-11                            Ruth 4:13
3. Isaac and Rebekkah        Genesis 24                  Genesis 24:58                         Genesis 24:67
4. God and Israel                 Exodus 19:8                Exodus 5:1                             Ezekiel 16:8
                                                                      (Through Moses before Pharaoh)
5. The Bride & Christ           John 3:16                   Romans 10:9-10                       Romans 12:4-5
                                                                                                                               I Cor. 12:12-13
                                                                                                                               Rev. 21:2-11

From the above you can see all three in each marriage. The Devil, in order to cause confusion deceived preachers into legalizing shacking up by these two doctrines of just coming together, or leaving cleaving and coming together.

Now the homosexual crowd is confusing marriage even more by saying two people of the same sex can be married. The definition solves this confusion. Marriage - the act of uniting a man and a woman for life.

There is nothing like a KJV Bible to clear up confusion.
