WHAT IS?

1. A legalist?

In these last days preachers who preach and stand for the moral law of God as God’s standard for holiness are being called legalist, by spineless compromissing preachers.

According to Webster’s 1828 dictionary " LE'GAL, a. [L. legalis, from lex, legis, law.]

1. According to law; in conformity with law; as a legal standard or test; a legal procedure.

2. Lawful; permitted by law; as a legal trade. Anything is legal which the laws do not forbid.

3. According to the law of works, as distinguished from free grace; or resting on works for salvation.

So a legalist is one who makes part of the law of God binding to obtaining salvation or keeping salvation. Look at Gal. 5:1-10 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you. A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be." Now If you will be honest, which a compromiser won’t be, you know that Judaizers had come into this church and were compelling these Christians to be circumcised, which is part of the ceremonial law of God, in order to stay saved.

According to Webster and Paul unless a preacher makes part of the law of God mandatory for salvation or to stay saved, he is not a legalist. When a preacher who preaches the moral law of God is accused of being a legalist by a compromising spineless whimp. The whimp is showing his ignorance, and trying to justify himself in the sight of others.

2. A Moralist:

Preachers who believe that God expects his people to live holy, "1Pet. 1:15-16 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.", also know that God has a standard of morality in the bible called the moral law of God.

Let’s notice some definitions from Webster’s 1828 dictionary:

MORAL'ITY, n. The doctrine or system of moral duties, or the duties of men in their social character; ethics.

The system of morality to be gathered from the writings of ancient sages, falls very short of that delivered in the gospel.

1. The practice of the moral duties; virtue. We often admire the politeness of men whose morality we question.

2. The quality of an action which renders it good; the conformity of an act to the divine law, or to the principles of rectitude. This conformity implies that the act must be performed by a free agent, and from a motive of obedience to the divine will. This is the strict theological and scriptural sense of morality. But we often apply the word to actions which accord with justice and human laws, without reference to the motives from which they proceed.

Moralist

MOR'ALIST, n.

1. One who teaches the duties of life, or a writer of essays intended to correct vice and inculcate moral duties.

2. One who practices moral duties; a mere moral person.

Holy

HO'LY, a.

1. Properly, whole, entire or perfect, in a moral sense. Hence, pure in heart, temper or dispositions; free from sin and sinful affections. Applied to the Supreme Being, holy signifies perfectly pure, immaculate and complete in moral character; and man is more or less holy, as his heart is more or less sanctified, or purified from evil dispositions. We call a man holy, when his heart is conformed in some degree to the image of God, and his life is regulated by the divine precepts. Hence, holy is used as nearly synonymous with good, pious, godly.

Be ye holy; for I am holy. 1 Pet 1.

2. Hallowed; consecrated or set apart to a sacred use, or to the service or worship of God; a sense frequent in Scripture; as the holy sabbath; holy oil; holy vessels; a holy nation; the holy temple; a holy priesthood.

3. Proceeding from pious principles,or directed to pious purposes; as holy zeal.

4. Perfectly just and good; as the holy law of God.

5. Sacred; as a holy witness.

Holy of holies, in Scripture, the innermost apartment of the Jewish tabernacle or temple, where the ark was kept, and where no person entered, except the high priest, once a year.

Holy Ghost, or Holy Spirit, the Divine Spirit; the third person in the Trinity; the sanctifier of souls.

Holy war, a war undertaken to rescue the holy land, the ancient Judea, from the infidels; a crusade; an expedition carried on by christians against the Saracens in the eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth centuries; a war carried on in a most unholy manner.

By definition then a moralist is one that preaches God’s moral law as the standard that God expects Christians to live by. He accepts God’s word as the final authority and does not try to explain it away for convinces sake.

If we had more moralist preaching, the people of God would live a more holy life. Isa. 58:1Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins. Jer. 23:21-22 I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied. But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings. If this don’t mean what it says then you tell me what it means.

3. Compromiser:

Definition: COMPROMISE, n. [L. To give bond to stand to an award, to promise. See Promise.]

1. A mutual promise or contract of two parties in controversy, to refer their differences to the decision of arbitrators.

2. An amicable agreement between parties in controversy, to settle their differences by mutual concessions.

3. Mutual agreement; adjustment.

[This is its usual signification.]

COMPROMISE, v.t.

1. To adjust and settle a difference by mutual agreement, with concessions of claims by the parties; to compound.

2. To agree; to accord.

3. To commit; to put to hazard; to pledge by some act or declaration.

[In this sense, see Compromit, which is generally used.]

Compromiser

COMPROMISER, n. One who compromises.

A compromiser is one who adjusts God’s standards of morality to suit self, ear tickling congregations and/ or families. He becomes the authority instead of God’s word.

Illustration: I have been told that a preacher that use to preach against women wearing pants has now said that it is no longer an issue due to the fact his wife wanted to wear pants.

(Jer 48:10) Cursed be he that doeth the work of the LORD deceitfully, and cursed be he that keepeth back his sword from blood.

Preacher which are you?
